Three Tombs
Elegant Traces of Seljuk Heritage: Three Tombs
One of the most mysterious and impressive historical structures in Erzurum, Three Tombs, is a unique group of monuments that presents the finest examples of Anatolian Seljuk tomb architecture together. Located right in the center of the city’s historical fabric, it is believed that the largest of these tombs belongs to Emir Saltuk, the founder of the Saltuk State, dating back to the 12th century. Although it is not exactly known to whom the other two tombs belong, they are dated to the 14th century.
The most important detail that makes these structures special is their unique architectural form. The Emir Saltuk Tomb reflects the deep symbolism of Turkish-Islamic art with its octagonal body and intriguing animal reliefs (such as bull, snake, bat). With its wide park area surrounding it and ongoing restoration efforts, it offers visitors a peaceful open-air museum atmosphere today.
